The most popular spaceship movies are typically the same ones that come out year after year, but what if you want to watch something new? You don’t have to resort to choosing between your favorite classics—here are three of the best spaceship movies you’ve probably never heard of.

1) Event Horizon

Event Horizon is a 1997 science fiction horror film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and written by Philip Eisner. The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan and Joely Richardson. It follows the crew of the Lewis and Clark as they investigate a distress signal from a ship that disappeared seven years earlier.

2) Serenity

Serenity is a 2005 American space Western film written and directed by Joss Whedon. It stars Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm Mal Reynolds, a rebel ensign who finds himself on the run from the Alliance after crossing paths with River Tam (Summer Glau), a psychic fugitive. The film was made on a shoestring budget and was released to mixed reviews, but has since become a cult classic among science fiction fans.

3) Sunshine

In Sunshine, a crew of eight astronauts are sent to the sun to reignite it with a nuclear bomb, but when they reach their destination things start to go wrong. The suspense and horror in this movie is expertly done, and the effects are still impressive today. If you’re looking for a edge-of-your-seat space movie, Sunshine is the one for you.
